I truly dislike the concept of “minimum viable product” or MVP. My goal is to create great products, not to expend the least effort to get something out the door. Look at this from the perspective of a consumer: Who wants a product even the creators think is half baked?

Evolution is a great way to get great products. The users who want half-baked products are the ones desperate for any solution. Which are great users to have.

Also, perfect is the enemy of good. Shipping fast gets you in a feedback loop, demonstrates fit, capitalises on user urgency. Waiting to ship "perfect" risks getting you in a Duke Nukem forever scenario

perfect and shipping fast are points on a spectrum, not alternatives to one another. I think that's the struggle with most teams.

It also depends on the product. E.g. No one desperately wants to have a half-baked vaccine for COVID, right? With regards to a tech tool or product, an MVP build should have some utility. This is especially hard for marketplace first companies.

Very valid point. Great products evolve organically through the demand of the users.

I’m being provocative to stress a point. I’m all for evolution and incremental improvement, but the words matter to me, because it speaks to outlook and goals. Do your best founders think about doing great work or minimally viable work?

I prefer Minimum Valuable Product. Puts the focus on Customer Value. It’s the minimum increment of product in which customers will perceive value AND PAY YOU.

And those users who desperately need the solution (yesterday) are the ones who will help you get it to great through feedback during usage.

Also interesting is that evolution relies more on recombination (occurs during synapsis) than on random mutation. For example, the image is a circle evolved from multiple generations of images selected and then pieces randomly recombined. Analogous http://evolgame.webs.com/ pic.twitter.com/IpnA82s8eU

If I try to restate your case in my own words, I can see how, if I were drowning in the ocean, half a life preserver would be better than none at all. I’ll think more about “desperate for any solution”.

this may be the best response to a critical viewpoint to a stated belief I have seen. Appreciate the openess and method you used to question your belief. Impressed
