That one alway struck me as particularly mistaken. Saying "it turns out that x" is no more than a way of saying that x is true, and that it's surprising in some way that it is. And surprises are exactly what essays are supposed to deliver.

I don’t dispute that it can make for good writing! Your “it turns out” writing is often strong — in part for reasons that post highlights. Anyways, you’re not “Uncle Bob”.
