I bet Apple didn't consider the possibility of second order effects, like the high cost of their new headphones making them unfashionable even among people who could afford them.

i think short term hes more right, long term you are. Apple did have a kind of egalitarian ethos at one point. Good design for the pleb. Lately its been gold watches and specs
-
That might have been 20 years ago. Ever since the introduction of the Mac, Apple has been top of market.

AirPods and iPhones are still among the most status-signaling tech products, even for middle class and lower middle class kids. Like with AirPods, I think memes will be the contagion. Sony and others offer better/cheaper units, but none as desirable.pic.twitter.com/3TdUhNGAEJ

Hmm this is as obvious as day and night right? I dont know how people question this really

Paul usually you’re sharp but this is contrarian nonsense. The iPhone is way more expensive than alternatives and that discourages almost no one.

iPhones aren't a single-function device... headphones are.

Going to operate on the assumption that, yes, the expensive fashion tech people thought about whether or not other people would find their expensive fashion tech product fashionable. They probably even gave some thought to pricing.
-
Paul’s critiques here sound uncharacteristically like moral judgements on consumerism, rather than business analysis. Veblen goods are an established way to position, & Apple is spending the premium on the tech & R&D required to build an experience-driven spatial computing offer.

I believe this will be a failed product and will eventually be discontinued or lower in price
