To try to answer the 2. question- Perhaps it could be approached from a similar way as it is used in University. A semester's course usually takes X hours. A student does not need to diligently work all those hours. Simply let clear progress on laid out tasks speak for itself.

I think it will depend a lot on the type of work. as far as I'm concerned: 1) e-mails already exist and are perfect for asynchronous work. 2) the turnover and incoming orders, as long as those are stable or growing no one will ever tell me anything.

2. By results, like it always should have been. Whenever you read history and someone accomplishes something, it is seen as a small wonder. I think that describes the problem better than anything else.

Oh, and as for the first part: whoever comes up with a more efficient way to create and pass on written information shall rule the world. We are moving away from writing which is bad. Nothing beats well written text as a source of information.
