Every Christmas season, I realize how little progress online shopping has made since the late 1990s. I'm still unsure if the item's really in stock, still typing many characters in forms, still getting my credit card rejected with random opaque error messages.

Hasn't Amazon pretty much solved all of these? -they display remaining stock on items -they have one-click purchasing Their monopolistic practices are abhorrent, but credit where credit is due.

I did buy something from Hollister for my wife and it's frustrating as hell since the website is served exclusively from the west coast it seems. Such a latency it feels like a 56k modem all over again. At least amazon works world wide and other major brands.

Nah, product line complexity should be manageable. See, e.g., Digikey, which lets you search for "resistor" made by "companies on earth"*, and still beats Amazon in how-easy-to-find-things. (*: Not all. But at 1.4 million results, point made.)
