Are you saying that rent-controls eat good architecture?
The missing corniches are a distinctly New York thing. Their potential fall is a liability, so landlords just hack them off, especially off rent-controlled buildings, where the only route to market returns is to decrease costs.

I’ve seen corniches be replaced with an exact copy in styrofoam. Looks exactly the same, but eliminates liability and is much lighter. I would just prefer the original though.
