The fact that this definition crept into becoming that of respectable outlets is a problem. What's also a problem is the lack of consequences of caring too much about timing vs. fact checking. Too much upside to publish quickly, almost no downside of being wrong and doing harm.

Plenty of downside. It’s just not priced into their business model. Like tobacco and lung cancer, oil companies and carbon, or social media and authoritarianism.
