Hypothesis: One way to tell whether someone's a "natural" at something is when they do it with style even when they're first learning and don't know much yet.

Or do we fall into flow while doing things that we love/curious about, and are good at doing?

it can also be because they have some other skill that's related. maybe you're nailing the first surfing class because you've been doing yoga for several years. it might still mean you're a "natural" at something but it might be a wider skill like prioperception/ balance

Yep, I very much doubt this idea of someone being natural at something. Usually if you're good at something right away it's because you have learned skills previously that are related and useful to this endeavor as well.

100p. I feel like this is particularly visible in sports, where style is so readily apparent. When someone does something “cool” on their first time out at a new activity, pay attention...

Yep, I have basically zero aptitude in most sports. No matter how much I try my body seems to not be able to develop the muscle memory to throw a frisbee straight...whereas many folks I know never had to learn.

I wonder if this could be translated to recipe for “natural brilliance”: Whatever you do do, get good at asking “what is this really about?” and do it your own way.
