This is a perfect example of the sort of article that would not have made the cut in the New York Times' newspaper of record days (which I'm old enough to remember), but does today.https://twitter.com/AlecStapp/status/1331684712792854529 …

There are real issues with inequality in our society, but it’s hard to see how it’s helpful for the NYT to publish misinformation. pic.twitter.com/QgwemjQuxI

(The class warfare stuff is the least of the problems with this article. Click all the way to the third image and you'll see what the real problem is.)

Yes this angle feels like clickbait-style class warfare incitement as opposed to framing in a way that would provide actionable ideas.

The +30% the NYT is talking about only applies if you're comparing now to when the index was the lowest in February - March, not if you're comparing to before the pandemic. So it's technically true but very misleading to the average reader.

They do label it Opinion. I wonder if "Opinion" content has taken over. I bet a data dashboard makes the connection between those headlines and more profit inescapable. Maybe we should start a #20ClicksADayOnGoodJournalism movement to change the incentives.

As the recent NYMagazine article highlighted, the Opinion section is a big culprit. Attracts huge attention because it preys upon emotion. As you've prev talked about, in their new data-to-optimize-subs-conversion, def radicalized that part & in process damaging the NYT-brand
