Juvenile or not, game theory wise, It’s a tactic that works in the short term?
Pretentiousness seems a specifically juvenile flaw. I expect to find it in high school and college kids, but I'm surprised to find it in adults. I think the reason is that experience beats it out of you.

Probably stems from insecurities one had as a child and regardless of experience and achievements, they never really outgrow it. Pretentiousness is but one of the many ways it rears it ugly head in adulthood.

It seems to me that being late could be called selfish or inconsiderate, but not specifically pretentious.
