Curiously enough, if changes in antitrust law caused more competition among search engines, that could stop it, because I believe Google's policies about duplicate content are one reason sites do this.

Filed under things you notice during the holidays. I am with Paul. I blame Google. SEO experts would be next. The poor food bloggers are just trying to earn a few eyeballs and pennies via their tech overlords.

Is it not also related to general copyright law? I know that's why cookbooks include long-winded stories.

I think it's actually more closely related to ranking factors which prioritize percentage of non-bounce users. If majority of visitors spend 30 seconds looking for the recipe before they leave, Google can't tell the difference between that and a good visit.

So the incentives for content producers are to produce a maze that delays people's decisions about whether or not the page is useful long enough to trick Google's algo. When that also changes, they'll just prioritize a different hack that someone finds which equally sucks.

An interesting regulation might be forcing fangs to split off their data from the application. If that data is available to be brokered and used for a price it would increase innovation.

Likely another key driver is the dynamics of display ad optimizations. Longer scroll behaviors drive more ad impressions, view-ability of ads in viewport, multiple ad loads as the user keeps trying to get to recipe and instructions. Gaming GAM
