"Make something people want" is fundamentally advice about being empirical, instead of assuming you already have all the answers. The equivalent for investors would be "Let founders teach you what people want."

Airbnb is the example I use of paradigm changing companies that I would never have invested in for simply not seeing how the future would evolve. Still seems like a crazy idea!

And the best case of this is being the user yourself. Here the question is: are there more people like you? Next question is: if so, how many? Then a typical user only knows what they already know. You have to provide the new way for them to see.
