Most people don't realize that the word "dated" doesn't mean old-fashioned. Something can be both dated and also perfectly aligned with current fashions. Indeed, it's almost certain that something perfectly aligned with current fashions is also dated.
I mean in the most literal sense of being able to attach a precise date to it.

While the point you’re making in your OP is sound, by invoking a less idiomatic (in this context) meaning of a word, you confuse the map (a word) with the territory (any of the various meanings it can have).

Saying that “dated” doesn’t actually mean out-of-date is a bit like saying that “force” doesn’t actually mean violence because it can also be used to mean mass times acceleration.
