What are these truths that you think can't be said, Paul? Given your history I'm quite they have to do with race, gender, or sexual orientation, and they are probably said routinely, only not without consequence.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1330523511534792706 …

If you believe there's nothing true that one can't say, then either ours is the first society in history for which this is true, which would be astonishing, or you're suffering from orthodox privilege (http://paulgraham.com/orth.html ).

No. Not in this country. If you say something that deserves social opprobrium--like advancing discredited race science--you'll get it, but that is not censorship. You can always go to Quillette or Parler and post whatever you want.

Really, you honestly believe that? Do you agree that this was not the case in any previous society (for previous = over, say, 50 years ago)?

You don't think there were consequences for saying things that violated consensus social norms over 50 years ago? I mean, that's an astounding obviousness to history. I'm pretty sure you could self ID as communist now without half the blowback you'd get 50 years ago.

You've misunderstood me. I'm saying there was plenty you couldn't say 50 years ago in the US, and in other countries, and everywhere else at every previous time too.

What I'm asking is whether you think there was any previous society in which there was nothing true you couldn't say, or whether you think ours is the first.

No. And that is not the argument I am making. I am addressing your assertion that the current environment, here in 2020, has a dynamic of left leaning people censoring speech on the right.

Do you think those things weren't said? Because they were, and protected in many quarters. Now speech is more public because everyone consumes media in some form.
