You underestimate how much better social media could be. To me it seems obvious that we're using a PoS version 1 that got frozen early in its development due to a combination of network effects and management turmoil.
My guess is that we'll look back on the current incarnation of social media with horror, and feel sorry for any thoughtful person caught in its toils.

Interesting that social media 1.0 does have some sort of positive reinforcement effect even though it’s so horrible and addictive. Can’t wait for the Larry and Sergey of social media to one up the Yahoo’s we’ve got now.

.. I don't know if this is still 1.0 though. With each new platform or major feature the paradigm seems to change significantly.
