Oh look, a shockingly bad take by a male professor @Yalehttps://twitter.com/NAChristakis/status/1329471888180072452?s=20 …

Disagree with a published paper? Don't like its conclusions, politically inimical to you? Find the methods imperfect? Do your own research to rebut it. Publish your critiques. But do not call for retraction of papers because of 'potential to inflict serious harm.' @NatureComms https://twitter.com/leslievosshall/status/1329455882481131524 …

Oh look, someone who has no argument except my gender. And, yes, I was mentored by the clear-thinking Renee Fox, who I admired and deeply respected.

The problem, I think, is that because the point you made was about as close as something can come to being self-evidently true, your critic didn't have available anything that might actually qualify as an argument. So she (or he) decided simply to denounce you to your university.

The most remarkable thing about this whole exchange, to me, is that this random anonymous Twitter account has managed to waste the time of two such smart people. This seems a problem not just with the way people use Twitter, but with its design.

It's a fair point, Paul. But I'm sure the reason Nicholas replied, and certainly the reason I made my point, is that one runs into this kind of nonsense (and not only on Twitter and other social media) all the time. One encounters it in class--and even in the faculty lounge.

You underestimate how much better social media could be. To me it seems obvious that we're using a PoS version 1 that got frozen early in its development due to a combination of network effects and management turmoil.

My guess is that we'll look back on the current incarnation of social media with horror, and feel sorry for any thoughtful person caught in its toils.

Interesting that social media 1.0 does have some sort of positive reinforcement effect even though it’s so horrible and addictive. Can’t wait for the Larry and Sergey of social media to one up the Yahoo’s we’ve got now.

That is almost exactly my view. It's like yellow journalism phase still. But I think society and the technology will adapt and perfect it. I hope.

That's exactly why we're disagreeing with you on your original tweet. Society needs a better way to handle misinformation. Your suggestion of "just adding criticism" to misinformation is exactly what you're complaining about not working with social media.

Paul, do you think Clubhouse can help to solve some of this? Do you see any social media 2.0 apps out there right now that look promising?

Part of it seems to be that Twitter didn't even understand why they were successful (as they've acknowledged) so they were reluctant to change the formula.

Should be social media platforms on which you can never say mean things about anyone. Children's social media should be restricted to such platforms.

But is that not the entire project - from Twitterverse to the faculty lounge - a radically egalitarian equity project where truth-as-power must be torn down and endlessly redistributed in temple of endless fragilities? For those who designed it, PoS v. 1 seems to be doing its job
