We really should be in the middle of a golden age of productivity. Within living memory, computers did not exist. Photocopiers did not exist. *Backspace* did not exist. You had to type it all by hand.

There was a grim period of overlap when we'd started programming computers, but backspace still didn't exist. I still remember how nervous I'd get when I was about 20 characters into a punch card. One mistake and you had to start over.

I worked in a college lab feeding cards into a reader three times a day. I thought the kids had it easy with keyboards while I was learning z8 assembly language loading programs one byte at a time with flip switches. Meanwhile there was a dude I knew winding his own memory coils.

I had one of my temp jobs in the summer between high school and college working in an office that used punchcards and an old IBM 570(?). Also used paper tape on a PDP 11 to store my “hunt the Wompus”
