glad startupland is on board with treating people the same way they'd treat any physical product that a startup produces - with a free 30 day no risk return policy

A trial period seems like a good idea for everyone Hiring right now is like “let’s go on one date and then decide to get married” It’s insane

Disrespectful? Not sure that's how I'd describe it - seems emotional That said Have often seen people take a 90 "test drive" with one another - see if it's a good fit professionally Seems to make sense

I mean it's disrespectful to not compensate those programmers for their time and energy, especially as people who have 1000+ hours of experience.
-
More specifically, you structure this as "they're both judging each other". However, the company is getting *direct* value out of the arrangement, whereas the human is getting a *potential* of value. That's imbalanced and abusive to the human.

I think the tensions re: “trial employment” comes from unequal perceived levels of risk: - the programmer doesn’t have income if the approach doesn’t work. - vs. impact on the company usually is much more muted due to the distribution of impact across the employee base.
-
I do agree that employment trials could provide significant benefit. Although the concept raises q’s relating to the employees ability to hedge risk within the trial. Maybe: longer term pay or “leave bonus”. Note: employment at will is kinda the same thing.

How much can be mitigated with more testing? You can't get a job as a ballerina or a ballplayer w/a resume; you have to show what you can do at length. We do a Fizz buzz thing and I'm glad of it—many programmers can't program. I'm wondering if a longer process makes sense.

I’d prefer this. I’ve started jobs that sound interesting but found out later were incredibly boring and weren’t something I could be passionate about doing. The mission and execution of it was always the most important thing for me.
-
When you left those jobs you were paid for the work you’d done, right? You didn’t just have a month of no pay.
