Hypothesis: Slack is one of the reasons workplaces have become more politicized, just as Twitter is for countries as a whole.

Tarak's explanation is totally consistent with the existing SV culture simply offering a conduit through which Jonathan Haidt et al. coddled mind and general wokeness can 'proliferate'. In this story, Slack is just the venue where this happens to express itself, not the cause.

Joe and Tarak - I believe what you guys are saying in my soul. Great insight. The moment we go back to employee as employee where it’s about the person’s work, rather than the person’s entire past, present and future, we’ll have healthier workplace culture.

Tarak’s take seems correct, particularly his mention of ‘long term’. Because it wasn’t as magnified and ubiquitous in 2000 doesn’t mean it wasn’t present. It takes time for such things to develop.

Also, was everybody quite so fired up politically in 2000?

Slack is just a fancy IRC, so why would it matter now?

Perhaps SV's politics have changed in the intervening decades, and the politics people are bringing to work with them are more authoritarian, intolerant, militant, etc? And/or perhaps SV has become more homogeneous in its political views?

Being at Google leading up to and after the 2016 election, I would say the election result was a huge catalyst for this behavior there. I think you could replace Slack with any workplace comms tools (Google docs sharing, internal forums, etc).

Wasn't in the SV scene in 2000 but from what I can tell it seems like the people there didn't differ much politically.
