          Hypoxyia-inducible factors (HIF-1 and others) are neuroprotective (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28004401/ ) and their expression is induced at high altitudes. It may also be protective from kidney disease. Oxygen is inherently toxic.

          Likely. Looking at the map of WA, there are some clear outlier counties where population is a relevant metric. // Makes me wonder about prevailing wisdom around diet. WW county has significant vegetarian population historically but is a hot zone here.
