Many who don’t understand that life today is much better than in the past don’t know how bad the past was. Many who don’t believe that the future can be much, much better don’t know how bad the present is.

Life is multi-faceted. Life is much better now by many criteria, but not by all. Life will be better in the future by some criteria and not by others.
You can collapse them by the expedient of asking which time in history you'd want to live in.
