Last night my sons asked me all about drugs. I told them in as much detail as I could about each kind. My hope is that "fentanyl is *way* more dangerous than pot" will work better than the implicit equality of "say no to drugs."

Yeah. Just because a drug is socially acceptable doesn’t mean it doesn’t have consequences. Also just because you teach your kids to say no to drugs doesn’t mean you can’t also have conversations about the nuanced consequences of different drugs, including prescriptions.

My parents never did the “say no to drugs” thing with me. Instead they told me the drugs they had used when they were younger, I was bored with the whole conversation, and have never done any drugs save booze and caffeine.

Not to mention aspirin. That said, the real issue, I think, is not having enough better to do. People are flawed, and people run in packs, and steer themselves by that and by trying to cope with problems.
