I also think bands undergo the same phenomenon. Who has the t-shirt that ‘proves you were there that you heard of them first’ (to quote cake). Then, the band
& ‘sold out.’

I think it goes back to the early 1600s; right when the joint stock company was invented it was used for the various East India companies, which did lots of evil things
