I was literally talking to the CEO of Substack last night about how startups attract haters as an automatic almost physics-like consequence of growth, and wondering how long it would take before they did.

Only consumer-visible startups automatically attract haters. If you start a B2B startup you can get as big as you want. But if you start a successful consumer-visible startup, you'll be gradually transformed in situ from plucky underdog to mustache-twirling villain.

What from your experience can you fit into a tweet or two? There has to be something about status quo bias involved.

unless the B2B startup sells to the government like Palantir

So true. When you get traction in the market the society is programmed to initiate people's mind to make openion about you.

either losers or people with too much free time to make up stories about how people that is successful is evil. Or a combination of both.

Well, @paulg - people hate them for reason. This is simply because consumer-visible startups quickly turn from innovation into monopolistic profit optimizers. Google, FB, Apple, Uber, etc etc

Oracle. Or do they not count because they earned haters the old-fashioned way?

I think a large part of the Oracle hate stemmed from how they handled consumer-ish products like the Java platform and MySQL after acquisition.
