One thing parents know that most non-parents don't: how much more kids can understand than you'd guess. You can talk to a 9 or 10 year old almost like an adult and they'll understand most of it.

It was really effective, almost too much so. I remember once telling them they could have another half hour of Minecraft (we gave them 1 hr/week of game time back then) and they worried it would be bad for them.
