Beware: the latest Chrome release may have a bug in it. I just tried to update Chrome, and it didn't restart automatically. The process hung and I had to use Force Quit. Lost all my tabs.

No you didn't, happened with me too. Just go to history and there's restore all tabs. Except incognito all will be restored

Won't work this time
@paulg but as I learned the hard way, will work everytime in future. You have to do this before opening any other tab in chrome on new restart. Use a session manager / store. Keeps a track of all the tabs you have open. Easy to restore.

When this happens the first move after reopening chrome is ctrl+shift+T. For cases that this fails i have an extension that saves the last session
