One thing parents know that most non-parents don't: how much more kids can understand than you'd guess. You can talk to a 9 or 10 year old almost like an adult and they'll understand most of it.

We have a 21 month old and we are consistently surprised by how much more she understands than we expect.

I do exactly this with my 3 year old (and always have). His language skills and understanding are streaks ahead of his peers. Not that I care if he’s ahead - it’s a lot more fun when we can have conversations, invent games and have adventures without me leading it all the time

Agree! A fave convo with my older kids, when they were 3 and 4, was in 2014 explaining (simply, w/o too much detail) the situation with Putin/Crimea. I asked how they would respond to the situation. Their responses were very thoughtful, belying what most think of kids that age.
