One thing parents know that most non-parents don't: how much more kids can understand than you'd guess. You can talk to a 9 or 10 year old almost like an adult and they'll understand most of it.

I "liked" this but I'm a non-parent who has seen a lot of parents not realize this simple truth about their children. Or if they do realize it, think their children can emotionally process information at the same level they're able to intellectually process it.

Definitely, I try to be careful about topics that will traumatize them. I don't think I've messed up so far, but I should try asking what's the most horrifying thing they've learned from me.
