One thing parents know that most non-parents don't: how much more kids can understand than you'd guess. You can talk to a 9 or 10 year old almost like an adult and they'll understand most of it.

I have a 2 year old and almost every parenting choice we make has a flip side we worry about. Always great to hear from parents with older kids so we can go into it with a little more knowledge

I've found my four year old losing sight of the parent-child distinction because we have always done the same. Having to dial back the peer style convos and autonomy a bit to regain some listening/compliance.

Instead of being told what to do, explain why to do it, & consequences of not doing some things & possibly allowing a bit of leeway to let them realise the downside of not doing those things is better! Sometimes they agree but still find it boring... Those r difficult areas!
-
Essentially explaining that there r no mistakes, only lessons of nature which repeat & there r always tradeoffs is key to imbibe early that some rules to b enforced as parents or other authority!
