One thing parents know that most non-parents don't: how much more kids can understand than you'd guess. You can talk to a 9 or 10 year old almost like an adult and they'll understand most of it.

Consolation: The primary task of parenting is not excellence, it's not horrendously fucking up, and most of the horrendous fuckups are obvious ones. Stable, supportive environment, predictability, etc.

It’s a pattern I’ve seen consistently throughout out my life. Most recent example is from my work, I work in one of the FAANGs, we have a rockstar junior eng who is growing rapidly in his career and is also very emotionally mature and grown up for his age,

to the extent that even our VP has 1:1s with him every six months and thinks he’ll be in a leadership position in a few years. He invited me to dinner at his home this last year, where I saw his relationship with this parents. It was so wholesome, mature and deep.

I'm doing this too with my three kids. I never baby-talked to them ever and spoke to them like they were just little human beings that deserve the same respect as I do. They aren't afraid to talk to adults.

No you're not wrong you'e exactly right. We give children often only as many pieces of the puzzle as we are comfortable giving. That often has more to do with us than what they actually want
