Occasionally people accuse me of inventing the conversations with my kids that I post on Twitter. What this tells me (besides that they're super nasty) is that these people don't have kids.

Incidentally, I don't talk to my kids like peers just for their sakes. I'm not trying to turn them into little prodigies. I talk to them this way because it's much more interesting than talking down to them.

Most parents even underestimate the children’s potential from my vantage point.

What stood out to you about how their understanding developed with age?
-
That the biggest obstacle when they were really young was impatience rather than stupidity. So increased understanding came almost automatically as they learned more patience.

Children can understand the world even better than many adults. Insightful question from my 6yo: "Why can't cousins get married and decide not to have children?" How can you answer that?
-
It's the same as the answer to "why can't I say &#%$" - a large number of people would be upset by it, and we should respect those feelings until such time as they change.
