What does MI need to do to become a major startup ecosystem?

It needs an ecosystem of exits, capital redeployment, and patient + educated early stage investors.

A network of stronger startup communities is better for the economy than a handful of hubs.

I think you need both. The internet is great, but it helps to have local in-person as well

I generally agree with your thesis about more exits and the capital from them flowing into those smaller communities, but I have a suspicion that if coastal money diversified without geographic restriction into these places it would move things along faster.

Then more and more talent would be pulled from hubs, which I think is a good thing and creates better outcomes overall.

I agree! I think the most natural early stage capital gets unlocked when an investor who understands the game just makes early bets on founders they’ve built relationships with over the course of a few years. Happens more naturally in a hub IMO.

@paulg are you still long hubs or leaning any bit decentralization? Were you ever necessarily? I remember the "Why startup hubs work" and "How to make Pittsburgh a hub" essays and wonder what your current take is...

Mostly still long hubs, especially for the earliest stages of startups.

Just read the Pittsburg essay for the first time. This line struck me “This is not a fast path to becoming a startup hub. But it is at least a path.” I feel like Ann Arbor/Detroit is on that path. What can we do to accelerate?

Worked on this problem a good deal with folks like @chrisheivly and @ebuchholz for CLE. Getting startups backed by coastal money and growing them in non-hubs is important, and obviously having those founders support post-exit is key because incumbents will rarely get it or help.
