The left is basically two parties today. The right has an inherent advantage.
If the Republicans did that, it would be very difficult for the Democrats to compete. The NPR-left would be such a ball and chain for them.

Two things are preventing Republicans from following the same script: 1) most politicians rely on GOP donors, who oppose this kind of populism, 2) most of the people who staff GOP administrations come up through think tanks, etc. that GOP donors funded

Trump mostly did the same things Republicans always do—TCJA, trying to repeal Obamacare—because there was no bench of Trumpers to implement other policies. He outsourced that all to Paul Ryan, and then added some tariffs of his own
