The problem is that Americans are selfish and greedy. If one thing was made clear it’s that you have to sell programs to the people as something where they gain. Everything is transactional with American voters. It’s the reason why Democrats are like this in the first place

the GOP can stop it this time by fielding just one other mainstream candidate in the primary. he accidentally became the nominee when 17 indistinguishable candidates split 67% of the primary vote share. the rest is history.

He only did it once and won though. Maybe it was an accident, or maybe he chose the right moment to run. My guess is that he would have had a failed attempt before 2016, 2016 wouldn’t have happened.

He ran a campaign for the Reform Party nomination in 2000 but backed out early in the primary season citing the infighting in the party.
