One thing I didn't get about technical fields as a kid is that rigor is the standard ideas have to meet, not the source of them. The source is often the cheesiest sort of guessing.

The amount of papers that gets tossed out by “reviewer 2” because the “work” is not “rigorous” enough is mind boggling... dropout, one of the biggest ideas of deep learning was rejected and never published :D

Paul, I am convinced there isn’t a conspiracy. It is that we’ve a very bad way of teaching content in many areas. The methods favor areas of philosophy or musical oral history & tradition. Under any tree, I stand+talk for 1 or 2 hrs & members of/audience make what they can of it.
