There's effectively a conspiracy to hide this guessing from students. The guessers themselves hide it in the tidying they do before publication, and science teachers hide it because they don't even know it happened.

That's why trying new ideas and iterating on them are extremely important in any creative endeavour. Most ideas won't ever work, but you don't notice until you try them. Those ideas which do work, only do after several iterations of tinkering.

I can't personally understand studies that work with choices for 3-10 options when a choice between 2 actually makes for a harder decision with less bias.
