Incidentally, the way to create a Twitter competitor is not to launch a head-on attack with a Twitter clone. It's to make something slightly different (ideally because it fixes Twitter's flaws) and that people only later realize has replaced Twitter for them.

PG, as a famous person, can you give us insight into why so many famous people use Twitter? You've got your own online community you could code/administer to your every whim, and yet you're here on the hellsite. (Not trying to be a jerk, important product research happening here)

It's the town square. HN was never meant to be more than the center for a small (but important) subset of users and topics. Plus (though this is an edge case few know from experience), it's not that fun to be a user of a forum you run.
