Surely Penhurst Place was modern when it was built in 1341. The key is to design what is modern now to last a thousand years.

I don't get it. Why doesn't the room just fill up with smoke?

There are three answers to that: They did. Smoke rises, and great halls were big. Great halls had a louver in the middle of the roof to let the smoke out. A fossil of this is preserved in university buildings meant to look traditional.
