Linux or GTFO?
I am automatically not interested in any home-<whatever> system with a Windows (or Mac) computer at the heart of it. Who installs new OS releases? The answer has to be either (a) no one, (b) me, or (c) someone else, and none of those options is acceptable.

Home-assistant running on a Pi is a great way to automate and keep things clean. Still has a ways to go to be user friendly, easy setup.

Agreed. Have it all be remote, making any updates transparent to the user and not requiring any steps on their part. No reason any devices can’t be wireless, managed through a set of apps, or one central app.
