Remember the good old days, when the CDC figured out things about infectious diseases before ordinary people?https://twitter.com/apoorva_nyc/status/1326312931617804294 …

BREAKING: Breaking from its tentative recommendations on mask use thus far, the CDC said on Tuesday that using masks benefits wearers, which is a step beyond its previous declaration that wearing masks would only protect those around them. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2020/11/10/world/covid-19-coronavirus-live-updates#the-cdc-updates-its-findings-mask-wearing-protects-you-not-just-those-around-you …

CDC's reputation is permanently trashed. It will have to completely rebrand under Biden. Ideas for a new name?

I wish they would go a step above that and recommend either a KF94 mask (South Korean N95) which is now available in the US online, or a MERV-16 mask by a Kansas company Filti, also just $1-2 a piece.

N95 masks seem to have the worst fit. KF94 are my favorite because they actually test the fit during certification.

Or perhaps those were not the good days. Maybe back then they were as incompetent as they are today and we just didn't know it. Maybe what actually changed is that we have widespread access to info/data, which enables smart people everywhere to figure things out for themselves.

And yet, despite widespread adoption of masks, “cases” continue to rise. People love the comfort of unfalsifiable hypotheses.

Masks aren't magic. But we can pretty easily test how they work in a lab, so it's not actually based on an unfalsifiable hypothesis at all.
