Because the left, more than the right, regard their political beliefs as a test of character. If you disagree with them, you're evil. And thus deserve for example to be fired.

I can see that if discussing politics at work, or a particular social situation. But it is still puzzling not being able to admit it to random strangers polling, especially in pre-election phone polling not face to face.

I think it becomes a habit not to speak candidly except with trusted friends. This is generally the case when certain beliefs are forbidden.
