I can see that if discussing politics at work, or a particular social situation. But it is still puzzling not being able to admit it to random strangers polling, especially in pre-election phone polling not face to face.

I think it becomes a habit not to speak candidly except with trusted friends. This is generally the case when certain beliefs are forbidden.

This is certainly not one sided, there's plenty of more lefty beliefs I have that I wouldn't walk around saying out loud in Texas for example out of fear of the exact same response you're talking about.

I guess I don't really disagree with the thought. It's just that both parties have non overlapping sets of beliefs they're willing to call you evil over. I don't flaunt my lack of religion in more rightward areas and I don't flaunt my preference for capitalism in more left ones.
