      Before elevators the classic 5+2 Parisian apartment house looked much the same as good apartment buildings have done since the days of ancient Rome.       I mean it increases segregation by x and y coordinates, not z coordinate.

          additional angle (anecdote from vienna/12th): in a house without elevators there is more "life" in the hallways, people meet, children play, pets wander around … house w/ elevators aren't designed like that (could be though, I guess)
