In the last week I've had conversations with 7 people who want to start their own research institute. Pretty sure they should all get together and start the "Institute Institute".

Many common threads. Perhaps the most common one: all see strong signs of certain latent communities that really _want_ to exist, around certain shared values, ideas & practices [different balances in each case], but currently don't.

A pretty common one: that current institutes work mostly for the institute, sometimes leaving individual researchers pretty unhappy and alienated.

However, it’s also worth noting that the desire to build a research institute is a signature rent-seeking move by academics looking to promote their pet perspective.
