Adam's essay is a good example of the point that an essay only needs a tiny delta of novelty if the topic is broad enough. In this case, the survey form is probably sufficient novelty. http://paulgraham.com/sun.html

Do you think that the software licensing approach will ever gain popularity again vs the SaaS approach?

In the realm of blockchain-based smart contracts, it is also conceivable to have software with built-in license fee payments as it is being used. Here is an open source example I recently created:https://github.com/aktionariat/contracts/blob/master/doc/draggable.md …

Very interesting. Small dollar payments (sub-$5) payments might also mitigate against subscription fatigue and spur some new SaaS combinations

@_adamwiggins_ there is one other proven model for paying for software you didn't cover: simply paying for the software once (not subscription). App store apps are the prime example of this. This is what users actually want, not "monthly subscription". Great essay! -
Yes, although one-off purchases are really just subscriptions in disguise: you pay to upgrade to a major new version every N years e.g. Microsoft Office. Things is a modern example. And Sketch has a nice take on this with their license-meets-subscription model.
