There's not much causality in that "after" though. Reagan won because he was so charismatic, not because of when he ran.

Reagan won because we were in a stagflationary recession, and Jimmy Carter was feckless. Those were tough times for families in debt. The Pain Index was high. But, yes, Reagan's charisma was powerful.
