My takeaway is that a large number of people HATE the cultural left (not the econ left) and are willing to put up with almost anything, including incompetence, chaos, corruption and bad policy, to signal their views loud and clear.

I don’t deny that these views exist—in two-party systems the extremes of either side will be intolerant. Even if you erased these extreme reactions, I still expect that many feel threatened by progressive values, and motivate them to degrade the left and view them as snobs

Yes, if we are identified with our values, then conflicting values pose a perceived existential threat by projecting dystopian and disenfranchising future scenarios.
