I love all of those things about the USA. I also love "ice cream cake"! It's a cake where the filling is ice cream and the frosting I guess is specially formulated to have the right consistency when frozen? So nice, and such a great party food, but I've never seen it in the UK

I've heard the last point a lot from people. What do people mean when they say that "America is great for its pragmatism"? I'm not saying America is not pragmatic. What I'm asking is: what is it that a nation does that makes people say "I like this nation for its pragmatism"?

Pragmatism: In Europe I once walked in a bar/cafe with one of those orange juice squeezing machines. I asked to buy two oranges. They would not sell me oranges. “These oranges are only for juice.” What if I pay for juice, but you just give me the oranges? “No.”

I don't see much resistance to open ambition in the other Western countries I am familiar with, as long as it is expressed by a decent human beings who do not create absurd externalities.
