If New York says “you should be richer”, Cambridge says “you should be smarter”, and Silicon Valley says “you should be more powerful”, which city says “you should be understanding new things that humanity does not yet know”? Wondered while reading @paulg on cities & ambition

Do you think this is still true? I spent my college years in Cambridge and felt strong values toward intelligence and knowledge, but it was missing a “pirate” mentality - a questioning of norms & what we think we know - that I think is necessary for great work.

The pirate mentality feels much stronger in the Valley, even these days - feels core to hacker culture and counterculture. I remember pockets of this at MIT, but there was also a lot of conformism.

@paulg Ben Franklin said "Keep the shop, and thy shop will keep thee". Which city resonates with this? Which city says "You should be your own boss" of a profitable business?
