What is the difference between virtue signaling, and wanting to set a good example?
Motive mostly, although the actions of people trying to set a good example will also tend to have a higher ratio of cost to visibility.

Maybe that's the underlying logic behind the quote "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." This cost can be difficult to perceive from the outside, unless someone is a very public figure (creating a bias re. celebrities and politicians)
